What does an oral cancer screening consist of?

Oral cancer can cause lumps on the neck and inside the mouth, so Dr. Anna Spencer will look for any visible signs of lumps, and gently feel for any bumps or abnormalities. He will also look for any red or white patches or sores that may be present in the mouth, as this is one of the most common signs of oral cancer. If you have been experiencing any mouth pain or unexplained throat soreness, you will want to let him know so he can keep that in mind as he is assessing your teeth, gums, and mouth and checking for other signs of oral cancer.

What are the signs and symptoms of oral cancer?

As with any disease, the earlier oral cancer can be identified, the better. Oral cancer does not always have noticeable symptoms in its earliest stages, but some of the common symptoms of oral cancer include:

  • Unrelenting Mouth Pain
  • Mouth Sores that Don’t Heal
  • Red or White Patches in Mouth
  • Tongue or Mouth Numbness
  • Consistent Sore Throat
  • Difficulty Swallowing or Chewing
  • Difficulty Moving Tongue or Jaw

Who is at risk for developing oral cancer?

Oral cancer is more likely to affect patients who are over the age of forty than younger patients. Men are also twice as likely to receive an oral cancer diagnosis than women. Regularly using tobacco products, consuming alcohol, and frequent sun exposure can all increase a patients’ risk for developing oral cancer. There is no way to prevent oral cancer, but fortunately, it is highly curable when it is diagnosed and treated early, which is why we encourage patients to get routine oral cancer screenings, especially if they are considered high risk.

-I was Recommended by a long time friend that works there (Selena) as she knew I was struggling to find dental care that was affordable but I also have a fear of getting work done. The facility is extremely clean and the staff was super nice. I have difficult work that needed to be completed and they were so patient with me it made me feel very comfortable. Highland Oaks will be my preferred Dentistry from now on!
